100 NONSENSICAL QUESTIONS (WEEK FIVE) ~ because I’m just too busy to blog something serious!

Question #5:
One character on Game of Thrones that
MUST NOT DIE

DAENERYS TARGARYEN
OR
TYRION LANNISTER?

The argument:

On one hand, Tyrion Lannister has to be one of the most complex, cool, and dynamic characters…ever. He’s smart as a whip, has a razor sharp tongue, and some of his lines are positively epic, ripe with both humor and wisdom! I’m not going to lie: I applauded when he escaped the trial by combat unscathed (didn’t go so well for his stand-in); cheered when he shot his father in the privy with a crossbow; and even laughed “MAO” when he strangled that back-stabbing trollop. (Hey, I write Dark Fantasy; I don’t hold back on the graphic scenes, either.) And underneath all that bluster and brilliance is this complex, wounded child who truly deserves his day in the sun. The way he’s been treated is horrific. His siblings are just shy of monsters (okay, so his sister, Cersei, is worse than a monster), but the point is this: No one deserves to rise to the top —and to live – more than Tyrion Lannister.

Except for, maybe, Daenerys Targaryen...

What can I say? She’s got it all: brains, beauty, power, grit, strength, wisdom, and DRAGONS! Did I mention she has three dragons (though two of them are going through a kind of awkward, teenage stage)? Just the same, Daenerys has been through a LOT (why-oh-why did you let that witch kill Draego? You knew she couldn’t be trusted!), and she has journeyed a long, LONG way to get to that iron throne. Despite all her adversity, her heart is still pure—though don’t get it twisted; she’ll still have you killed in a heartbeat—and she always strives for justice and harmony.

So this is a hard one…

Because I don’t think Game of Thrones would be the same powerful show without either one of them.

It’s been awful enough losing the Starks. Could we really stand to see Daenerys fall “just this shy” of her ultimate goal, not to mention the claim her family has on that throne? No. No. And no. So there it is in black and white: While it would be devastating to lose Tyrion, it might be irreconcilable to lose Daenerys.

Don’t do it, George! Don’t do it.

And for that reason, I’m going with the Targaryen: DAENERYS!

100 NONSENSICAL QUESTIONS (WEEK FOUR) ~ because I’m just too busy to blog something serious!

Question #4:
Who’s the better super hero (the coolest dude)?

BATMAN OR SUPERMAN?

The argument:

First, I have to acknowledge that this question is NOT nonsensical to a lot of superhero fans (and you have my utmost respect); however, since my knowledge of each character is negligible, my discussion will be brief.

On one hand, superman is just plain cool. He looks good, he acts cool, and he repeatedly saves the planet. Not only is he faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, and able to leap a tall building in a single bound—but he wages a never-ending battle for truth and justice. Now that’s just the epitome of moral character and integrity. And frankly, I would still be impressed if he could only leap a short building (or even a double-wide trailer) in a single bound. Besides, who else—anywhere in the universe—could completely and effectively disguise their appearance simply by putting on a single pair of glasses? That alone makes him spectacular. Yes, there is the whole Kryptonite thing, but seriously, who has kryptonite? Where would you even get it?

Okay, onto Batman: At first glance, I had nothing! He wears a fairly silly suit, can’t even fly without the help of a jet-pack (what kind of bat can’t fly? Can he at least hang upside down?) and from what I understand, he doesn’t even have super powers (is that one or two words?). So, in the interest of being fair, I reached out to my nephew, who immediately set me straight!

  • Batman has Ninja skills!
  • He hates guns and doesn’t kill people ~ so he’s super moral (an all-around good guy).
  • He’s a billionaire, so there’s that.
  • "Chicks dig his car.” ~ Nephew’s words J
  • He has a ton of really cool gadgets, and he’s absolutely brilliant (as in super-high IQ).

Fine, so I get his appeal: As a fellow member of the Justice League, he’s also got integrity. As a disgustingly-wealthy dude with a REALLY cool car, he’s not hard up for dates. As a powerful thinker, he could probably outwit, outlast, and outplay anyone, which means he could also win Survivor.

But here’s the thing: some fictional enemies need to be killed. Really, though; they just do (can anyone say Joffrey from Game of Thrones?). And there’s something to be said about being tossed into the ring and being able to brawl – without needing gadgets, a plan, or one’s butler. (Okay, so that last one was uncalled for.) I guess in the end, it comes down to one thing (for me, anyway): Clark Kent and those incredible glasses!

That still blows me away.

So yep, I’m going with SUPERMAN, but only by a bit.

100 NONSENSICAL QUESTIONS (WEEK THREE) ~ because I’m just too busy to blog something serious!

Question #3:
Which epic biblical character had more swag?

NOAH OR MOSES?

The argument:

On one hand, Noah did build an enormous boat capable of holding tons of weight, and he lived in it for over a year! That would take stellar engineering, inordinate patience, and a whole lot of fresh drinking water…I mean, a whole lot of faith.  Presumably, he also got tossed around on the sea for over three months; didn’t squirm a bit at all the lions, tigers, and bears (oh my!); and I’m not even going to speculate on who mucked the pachyderm stalls (think about it). So yeah, he was a pretty tough character.

On the other hand, Moses brought all those plagues to Egypt (with a little help, of course), spoke to a burning bush, and wandered in the desert for forty years! Okay, so he might want to take that last one off his resume – not exactly a positive endorsement. (MacGyver would have at least built a compass.) However, Moses did part the Red Sea and walk across the bottom. And of course, there’s Charlton Heston.

So that kind of clenches the deal.

I'm gonna have to go with MOSES

100 NONSENSICAL QUESTIONS (WEEK TWO) ~ because I'm just too busy to blog something serious!

Question #2:
Which species make the BEST blockbuster movies?

DINOSAURS OR HUGE GORILLAS?

The argument:

On one hand, we have EPIC movies like Jurassic Park and Jurassic World; museums with incredible, monstrous displays; and picture-books with renderings that strike fear in our hearts. (Would anyone really keep going to that theme park after the first disaster?)

On the other hand, we have King Kong, and let's face it: That ape had swag! Not to mention, Rise of the Planet of the Apes -- that was crazy! Can you even imagine an ape named Caesar telling you (in human words): "Human home. Ape home. STAY AWAY!!!" Oh yeah, I'm looking for another source of water...I'm staying far, far away.

Still, T-REX could rip you in half with one bite...

Hmm.

All things considered, this one is tough. They both have notable merits. (And you notice, I left Godzilla out of the discussion because what happened with that movie, anyway?) I hate to be indecisive, but this one is a draw, fifty-fifty.

DINOSAURS AND APES
